SYNOPSIS:
Each April Fool's Day, fabulously wealthy young Desiree Cartier hosts the most killer coming-out parties at her to-die-for southern mansion. And this social event is never complete without one of her patented pranks. But when this year's joke turns deadly, Desiree, her brother Blaine and five of their friends all become the targets of a twisted killer who begins hunting them down one by one in this chilling tale of seduction, betrayal and revenge.

So there we were, minding our own business and this DVD came along. Check out the cover – it spells and for what we think is an apt term, “screams” B grade through and through. Another slasher flick? Another group of unknowns hoping to make it big like how the stars did in Scream (1996)? Well, it’s been 12 years since Wes Craven’s slasher hit made headlines by bringing fresh air to the genre.
Twelve. Whole. Years.
And what makes directors Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores (collectively, and for that matter, amusingly, known as “The Butcher Brothers”) think that they can remake this 1986 movie and repeat the success of what happened 12 years ago?
Bear with us while we do the obligatory synopsis introduction: Two rich (read: spoilt brats) teenagers throw a party for their friend. Alas, no thanks to an April Fool’s Day (hence the title, get it?) joke, an accident happens and causes the death of one of their friends. One year on, this tragedy returns to haunt them in ways they could never imagine. Cue elimination of clueless teenagers – one by one, in order of crediting, possibly.
While this isn’t the most creative and innovative story you’ve heard in years, you must give credit to the production company who decided to give this straight to video release the go ahead. A plot which involves drugging champagnes, prying camcorders, fatal pranks and mysterious packages which return to haunt those involved in the accident? Haven’t we seen them somewhere else before? So much so that everything has become a blur in our minds?
Next, let’s move on to the young stars of this movie. We’ve got Taylor Cole, Josh Henderson, Scout Taylor Compton, Joe Egender and Jenifer Siebel headlining this movie. Hands up, if any of these names immediately ring a bell to you? Cue awkward silence as we hang our heads in shame, mocking these young aspiring stars like that. Tsk, tsk.
After slamming the uncreative storyline and the not so exciting cast, we have to talk about the scares the filmmakers tried to incorporate into the movie. Let’s just say that while there are movies which make you grip on to the edge of your seats, this one allows you to visit the washroom at least three to four times during its 91 minute runtime and still not particularly engaged upon each trip.
You’d probably be buying this if you have a strange habit of collecting slasher flicks to show off to your friends when they come over for parties.
